UrbanGlass NYC Subway Mosaic Scavenger Hunt *

UrbanGlass is a glass blowing studio located on Fulton Street in Brooklyn that opens its studio to the public and students so they have an opportunity to create art with glass.
UrbanGlass had a vision to help generate interest in glass artwork that New Yorkers already come across during their everyday commutes throughout the city and so the NYC Subway Scavenger Mosaic Hunt map was created.

The Cover

The cover reflects a subway platform with a Brooklyn bound train stopping at “UrbanGlass” which would be the starting point.

Helvetica Neue LT Std is the main font utilized throughout the design in accordance with UrbanGlass’ requirements and because it is close to the original Helvetica font utilized in the NYC subway signage.

The name of each station is accompanied by a visual of the train line that reflects the color and letter or number of the stop in which you can find these mosaics.

The NYC subway system is vast, the hunt for mosaics is does not need to end here. The map includes blank space for participants to list other mosaics they may come across.

The Mosaics

Each mosaic in this map was specifically chosen so that participants could flow between boroughs and train stations.

A checkbox was also included so that the participant can keep track of which mosaics they have come across.

During my time as an intern at UrbanGlass, I also had the pleasure of working with New York City’s Cultural After-School Adventures program. I assisted in teaching students in grades 2 and 3 at P.S. 9 with the mosaic making process. Here are some of their mosaics.
